Odd Thoughts

So, here’s the deal.  We have an 80-pound dog, and an 8 pound cat.  They don’t see eye to eye physically or figuratively. One thing they do have in common, is they love to lie down in the middle of the doorway or entry way all over the house.  If you try to step over them, the dog will try to stand up which makes you straddle him like riding a horse.  While the cat will freak out and run into your legs.

Rashi the cat in her monorail cat pose
We call this “monorail cat”. But she does this across the doorway too.

When this happens and your foot comes in contact with the dog, you break your foot.  If your foot happens to run into the cat, you break the cat.  In either case, you’ll fall and break your hip.  Only the dog gets out of this unhurt.

I grew up in Miami in the 60’s and 70’s.  I know hurricanes and really feel sorry for the folks in the New Orleans and Bermuda areas.  They have been getting slammed with storms this year.  Back in when we were hit with three hurricanes in six weeks.  Here in Daytona Beach area we had Charley, Frances, and Jeanne, while Ivan stayed far enough away from us, it did affect parts of the state.

But here’s what I’m seeing; “Life threatening storm surge”.  I don’t remember seeing that phrase so often in previous years.  My older brother tells me the hurricane Donna in 1960 caused a massive storm surge that flooded our yard, and we lived a good 10 miles from the coast.  I have to believe that climate change is the main reason that storms have become more frequent and stronger.

Hurricanes seem to hit so more frequently in my youth, nut not as hard.  Later, when I was grown, I always joked that if we didn’t get at least one hurricane a year we got mad because we were missing out on a hurricane party.  That’s not true of course.  Well it may be truth for some folks.

You have to understand that hurricanes are such a way life in south Florida we nicknamed the university the Hurricanes.  Their mascot is Sebastian the ibis.  Why an ibis?  Because the ibis is the last animal to leave the everglades before the storm and the first to return after the storm.

Here’s a joke we used to say before that started using male names for storms; “Why don’t they name hurricanes after men?  Because they wouldn’t make it past the Virgin Islands!”.   Hey – it was funny when I was 10.

Genealogy isn’t rocket science.  It’s much, much harder!  I’m not necessarily saying that tongue in cheek.  Take this post from my genealogy blog.  It was so very difficult to put the dilemma in words that it may not make sense to those that do have experience in genealogy.  In short, I think I have two ladies with the same name in the wrong places. The one I have as my great grandmother may belong with the family of her cousin and vice versa.  The do have the same names and are rather close in age.  In any case, I set that problem aside and started working on Wifey’s family for a bit.

Let’s return to the cat for a moment.  For a tiny little thing, she makes one hell of a mess.  She will grab a mouthful of food then let most of it fall out of her mouth on to the floor while she chews.  She throws her head around like it’s something still alive and she has to kill it.  So know we have little kibbles all over the bathroom floor.  She also tends to splash her water out on to the floor as well.  I’m wondering if she thinks she’s a racoon and is washing her paws.  She used to splash water into her food dish and let it sit there.  Then she wouldn’t eat the mushy food.  She doesn’t like any wet food, nor will she eat any tuna, shrimp or other seafood.  She is a very weird cat.

Well, that’s all I have for now.  Here’s a semi-related video.  It’s about a dog, and it’s political.  This is election season here in the USA.  I will be so happy when all the ads stop! Thanks for reading!

It’s A Dog’s Life

Here at Campbell Castle (West), we like our pets. So, let me introduce you to our “Big Guy”, my “grand-dog”, Baron. Baron has lots of titles; Baron Von CouchPotato, Baron Von LazyBones, and Baron Von ChowHound to name just a few.

Baron is a good dog, not the sharpest crayon in the box, but he doesn’t seem to care. He loves his girls, and is rather protective of them.

We rescued Baron just about a year ago. When we brought him to the first vet visit, he weighed about 75 pounds (32 Kg for you metric folk). Then just 7 months or so later he developed “Idiopathic Head Tremors”. This is a very scary looking event where the dog’s head and neck shakes like it’s having a seizure. It could be an epileptic seizure, but usually isn’t. I was lucky enough to catch one on video and we took him back to the vet.

He owns the couch.

In my opinion the vet tried to oversell us. She wanted to put Baron on several meds and send him for neurological exams. I didn’t agree with this plan at all. One thing we did find out was that Baron Von ChowHound seemed to be Baron’s usual mode. He was over 100 pounds! 101 to be a bit more precise. Needless to say, a new diet plan was instituted.

After a month of easing his portion size and slowly introducing a low calorie dog food, we had to switch the brand of food. The vet had suggested a prescription weight loss food. Baron didn’t like it much, and was eating way too little. And crying. The boy is very vocal. Not so much barking, but whines and cries like no other dog I have ever heard.

Dogs love trucks!

Yesterday we took him for his yearly exam and he has lost 11 pounds. This is only over a 3 month period too! He seems to be doing much better on this new food, but still is always begging for more. But once we get him back closer to the 75 – 80 pound range, then he should be able to get a slightly bigger portion of food.

We call this “monorail dog”.

Baron is a very good looking, though somewhat smaller version of Scooby Doo. He has a lot of personality, and is a big bully. His head is as big as a bowling ball, and he uses it to push his way into everything. We had to buy a garbage can with a locking lid to keep him out of the trash.

As I mentioned at the top, Baron is my “Grand-Dog”. Everything is registered under son-the-younger. He lives here with us and loves to dig up my yard!

Son-the-younger and Baron a day or two before he came home.

And since we have switched him from the Purina food we have not seen any more tremors. We even did the “Doggie DNA” test. We did this mainly since he was a rescue, we had no idea his mix of breeds, and we wanted to be prepared for any possible future medical issues we might encounter. Such as – Idiopathic Head Tremors are very common in bulldogs, and Baron has a high percentage of Bulldog DNA.

We have a fire station less than a mile from the house. Seems the sirens are.. well, you decide.

He is singing the song of his people!

Random Photographs

Just a few photos of our random life. And I promise, no pictures of food (my older brother laughs at me for posting pictures of my food. But there’s lots of that on my Instagram – link at the bottom of the post).

My early morning crack genealogy crew! Animaniacs Forever!!!
Baron von LardAss hanging out in my beatup truck. Please note the beer and bluetooth speaker blaring the tunes. A typical Sunday afternoon.
A small muder of crows carousing in the road. At any given time there will be three times this number in the area.
The granddaughters striking a pose at Castillo de San Marcos, St. Augustine.
A foggy morning in the backyard.

All pictures were taken on my Google Pixel 3XL cellphone. Only the first picture uses the “Night Sight” option, all others were a simple point and shoot.

Hope you enjoyed these. Post some of your photos in a comment!

Nothing To See Here

Just here to post this meme son-the-elder sent me.

This is relevant because my boss has pugs. Whenever he gets sick we say he has the “pug flu”.  I will admit that pugs are not my cup of tea but to each his own. Also, man buns are without a doubt the stupidest haircut for men since the mullet.

Empty Post

No need to like this post, it’s simply a test post. Seems that every time I post something, I will get at least one “like” within seconds with no views recorded. No way someone could have read my entire post that quick. So I’m checking for who has a script running. I figure it’s a ploy to get views on their (probably virus-laden) site.

So here goes nothing… And I’ll throw in a video to make it interesting.

Catz…

So one of my blogger friends posted a blog about cats yesterday.  I bemoaned (yes that’s the correct word) that you cannot post pictures in comments on Word Press. At least not on the plans that we use. maybe the top of the line plan allows it, but I can’t afford that.

So I thought I post the pictures I would have used in the comments here.

If you have a ceiling cat, you must have…

foretold

He’s coming was foretold on ancient murals.

And finally a video my coworker Corey turned me on to;

I’m sure those that have been on the ‘net for more than a year or two have run across the infamous “I Can Has Cheezburger“. This site (which has swallowed up several other similar sites) has a great compilation of cat & dog memes. Some are quite humorous, some well, not so much.

Hope you enjoy this.  I’d say leave me some new pictures in the comments, but that doesn’t work. But if you know to get pictures in comments, please leave a comment with instructions!

Thanks!

Tuesday Morning Blues

Tried to get Rashi, the cat to cover for me at work today as I have virtually nothing to do (Christmas holiday means damn near everyone is off). But as you can see, she was already into the catnip and was in no shape to do anything…

I’m just a bit jealous..

“They call it stormy Monday, but Tuesday’s just as bad…”
