St. Brigid’s Day

I am not a religious person.  I wouldn’t put myself in that odd “spiritual, but not religious” group.  I guess, I just don’t faith in anything anymore.  But today is St Brigid’s Day.  For the Celts this was also known as Imbolc, and for some reason, the first day of spring.  Seems a bit early for spring to me.  I guess they were wishing for spring like weather.

Brigid was, before the early Roman Christians subverted her into a saint, worshiped as a goddess by the Celtic people.  I’m not going to get into the history of Brigid, either as a goddess or a Christian saint.  But from what I’ve read, she must have enjoyed her beer.  There is a wonderful story of how she turned water into beer.  And for me personally, that’s much better than turning anything into wine.  The only thing better would have been turning the water into a nice malt whisky.  But that’s not how the story goes.

The story goes that one day, while working in a leper colony, she discovered to her horror that they had run out of beer.

It’s important to understand that in those times, centuries ago, beer was consumed on a daily basis as a source of hydration and nourishment.

In any case, back in those times many of the water sources close to villages and towns were often polluted to the point where consumption would likely result in illness or, worse still, death.

Alcohol offered an (almost) germ free alternative and was almost as good as any meal of the era.

So, to be faced with a beer drought was nothing short of disastrous.

Not that it mattered all that much to St Brigid.

Channeling a little divine intervention, she answered the prayers of the thirsty lepers under her charge by turning the water they used to bathe into not just any beer, but a genuinely brilliant beer that was enjoyed by one and all.

Her water-based exploits don’t end there either.

Another part of the legend says St Brigid also succeeded in turning dirty bathwater into beer for the clerics visiting the leper colony where she was based.

There’s even a tale of her supplying some eighteen churches with enough beer to last from Holy Thursday through to the end of Easter despite only having one barrel to her name.

Whether fact or fiction, one thing appears undeniable: St Brigid liked beer.

In any case, her legend lives on through St Brigid’s Day and literature like the famous 10th century poem that speaks of her efforts in giving “a lake of beer to God.” Amen to that.

Beat that (Saint) Patrick.

And here’s the poem the above post mentioned.  I would also like to point out that wifey posted this poem many years ago over on FarceBook, I mean Facebook, and a shit storm followed.  Several folks of a much more conservative religious view than ours took much umbrage at the mention of beer and god in the same article.

It would appear that these folks didn’t seem to understand that in the 10th century or so, when the poem is said to have written, the water wasn’t fit to drink as the post quoted above mentions.  Some folks just don’t get it.  </sigh>

I'd like to give a lake of beer to God.
 I'd love the heavenly
 Host to be tippling there
 For all eternity.

I'd love the men of Heaven to live with me,
 To dance and sing.
If they wanted, I'd put at their disposal
 Vats of suffering.

White cups of love I'd give them
 With a heart and a half;
Sweet pitchers of mercy I'd offer
 To every man.

I'd make Heaven a cheerful spot
Because the happy heart is true.
I'd make the men contented for their own sake.
I'd like Jesus to love me too.

I'd like the people of heaven to gather
 From all the parishes around.
I'd give a special welcome to the women,
The three Mary’s of great renown.

I'd sit with the men, the women and God
There by the lake of beer.
We'd be drinking good health forever
And every drop would be a prayer.

A blessed Imbolc to everyone!

Peace,
B

Just keeping the blog name relevant here..

Seems to me that Mars (AKA the red planet) is turning into an interplanetary Club Med.  The UAE, China, and now NASA have all sent rockets out that way.  I’m thinking that a Motel 8 with an attached Denny’s will be built soon.  But we all know that it all comes crashing down on 5 April 2385.  What, you don’t watch Star Trek: Picard?  Shame on you.

Seems mother nature is at it again.  #Floriduh is once again in her sights as a tropical storm is bearing down on us.

But it’s only a tropical storm so us natives don’t get too excited. We just check the battery cabinet, grab another adult beverage and call it a day.  Besides this is, as of now, a rather disorganized storm. Not to mention it is expected to cross over Hispaniola and its rather tall mountain range, a known storm killer.  As the image show, the current track takes it east of us which means the strongest part of the storm will be on the other side, out in the Atlantic.  I am so very happy that I am not working my last job anymore.  I would be getting ready for another stay in the lovely EOC if the storm does hit.  Tropical storms are anything but predictable, so this may change.  Watch this space!

On the genealogy side, I found two cousins that appear to be on the Campbell side!  This is most unusual, as I’ve always maintained that my Campbells won’t do a DNA test lest we be connected to a 15th century cattle raid.  We Campbells’ aren’t the most trustworthy lot, after all.  As both these matches are just beginning their family trees, I can’t yet place them on my tree.  Hopefully, they will take my offer to help them get going and we can find our common ancestors.  Only time will tell.

I did enjoy the way many of our news outlets stated the testimony of several of our big tech companies had before members of congress yesterday.  To paraphrase “Congress to grill tech CEOs”.  I offered to bring the charcoal, but nobody took me up on the offer.  Their loss.

Things here at the house are changing.  Seems that our granddaughters will be here full time.  Meaning my thoughts of a “quiet retirement” have been changed.  Not that it bothers me.  I look forward to having them here to do their remote schoolwork.  The tech available at our house is much better than what is available at other family members homes.  I will have to get at least a part time job to offset the additional costs that are associated with having two more folks here full time, but in all honesty, I was already looking.

Remember this meme from before the 2016 election?

It’s becoming more and more true.  Our “Dear Leader” will not say if he will accept the November election results if he loses, and today floated the idea that the election should be delayed “…until people can properly, securely, and safely vote???”.   The “last president” indeed.  I do fear a civil war is brewing.

For those of us here in #Floriduh (and I can call it that as a native-born son), our “Dear Leader” Governor Ron DeSantis has spawned several new memes.

I have long referred to him #GovRonDeMoron or #GovRonDeVirus, but #DeathSantis fits so much better.  Once we can get rid of him we can go back to being #Florida.  Yes, #FloridaMan and #FloridaWoman will still help keep us #Floriduh, provided of course that they survive.

Seems that beers sales are bouncing back.  Well, I had nothing to do with that for once.  I’ve been avoiding beer as of late, although the growler of Pale Ale son-the-younger brought home from his work last night was very tasty.  The main reason I’ve been avoiding beer is the carbohydrates.  I am trying to lose weight although at my age that’s neigh on impossible.   I’m hoping that even a part time job will get me out of the house enough removing me from the snack box.  Whisky on the other hand is a genuinely nice substitute.

Wifey and I are ready to go back to Scotland. Who’s with us??

Have to figure out where all the coffee is going. It seems we are buying bags and bags of beans every week. You don’t think my being home all day has anything to do with it, do you? Nah…

Finally, get out and #VOTE.  Yes, I’m talking to you.  I’m not going to tell you who to vote for, nor ask you who you did vote for.  I will ask you if you plan on voting.  I will vote via mail this year.  Having been in the military for so long it seems second nature to me.  Plus, I hate standing in line for anything!

Here is a totally unrelated video for you.  Enjoy!

Corona Beer vs Coronavirus

My last post talked about our upcoming cruise and COVID-19. Let’s continue that thread. To be truthful I am more than a bit apprehensive about this upcoming cruise. My last vacation didn’t end very well…

We all know that the novel coronavirus does not come from Corona beer. Nothing comes from Corona, no flavor, no buzz, nada. You get nothing from this so called “beer”. Although I have heard that it makes a decent rinse after washing your hair. I have not tested this. Yet – this.

5W Public Relations said that 38% of Americans wouldn’t buy Corona “under any circumstances” because of the outbreak, and another 14% said they wouldn’t order a Corona in public. The survey encompasses polling from 737 beer drinkers in the United States.

https://www.cnn.com/2020/02/28/business/corona-beer-marketing/index.html

I do have to question the validity of any alcohol related poll that only has 737 respondents. With that small a sample size I’m thinking some guy just sat in bar somewhere asking random strangers questions. If this “survey” took place in a more urban area, the percentage of those avoiding Corona would be very high. I know the majority of my friends would fall into the “under no circumstances” category. Not due to anything with the virus, my friends tend to enjoy a better quality of beer.

Unsurprisingly, our idiot-in-chief claimed several days ago that (paraphrasing here) “We have stopped it”. Of course, no proof was given, mainly because it was an outright lie. The USA doesn’t even have a plan for any epidemic/pandemic.Why? Because our great leader fired the pandemic response squad in 2018.

So just who is working the case? Why none other than our science fearing vice president. This guy, Pence, when governor of Indiana did nothing during an HIV outbreak back around 2015. See this report.

The brilliant Canadian political cartoonist, Michael de Adder, drew it perfectly.

Now I hear that there is a run on toilet paper? Why? This is a respiratory illness, not a gastrointestinal virus. Facial tissues I can understand. In fact, when we went grocery shopping this past weekend the store had a sign that due to heavy demand tissues were limited to two per person, but the shelves were stocked. No rush there. What can help you is soap and water to wash your damn hands. If you’re not near a place to wash up, use an alcohol based (60% or higher alcohol content) hand sanitizer. Face masks will not help much – unless you are positive for the virus. Then you should wear a mask to KEEP OTHER PEOPLE SAFE!

Hopefully you won’t have to go to extremes to find your hand sanitizer…

So, how likely are you to catch this virus? As I alluded to, washing your hands is the best advice that can be done just about any time. This has long been recognized as the first and best line of defense against a virus of this type. With any luck you’ll be like this guy.

Why should you trust me? I may be a retired paramedic, but –

I can guarantee that if you do get this nasty bug, you’ll need to see a doctor, and get a prescription. But not one for cowbell, that won’t help at all.

Seems that the stock market is having issues as well. Not unexpected, but still troublesome. Luckily, I don’t have all that much left in my old 401(k) nor my IRA. I may just pull it all out anyway. This tweet is (sadly) fake. Not that he shouldn’t be fired from a cannon just on principal.

Now here’s a video about the end of a nuclear war, which is alomst the same as a global pandemic. And no, we are not really at the point of a global pandemic. Yet. I really hope it doesn’t get that far, but I am rather concerned it will.

Peace,
B
